JOHN ALLEN has a general practice, with a focus on business law and estate planning. After being called to the Bar in 1991, John clerked with the Ontario Superior Court, joining his father Bill Allen in the practice of law in 1992.
John has a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Laws, and, while working full-time, obtained his Masters and PhD in law from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto (dissertation).
John has been counsel for and a director of a number of private and public companies, including a real estate investment company and an energy resource company both listed on the TSX Venture Exchange.
In addition to his law practice, John has written various legal texts. He authored the Quicklaw / LexisNexis “Allen securities netletter” for six years, co-authored the 3rd Edition of the Estate Planning Handbook with Bill Allen, the 4th Edition with Brian Quinlan (CPA), and the 5th edition of the Estate Planning Handbook with Brian Quinlan. John, along with Adam Malek, Brian Quinlan and Dickson Lai, recently published How to Administer an Estate in Ontario. John is co-author of the annual Handling Provincial Offence Cases in Ontario with Justice Libman of the Ontario Court of Justice; was the co-editor of RegQuest, a monthly update on regulatory offences and compliance in Canada with Justice Libman and Professor Aron; and he has written articles for the Canadian Business Law Journal, the Advocates Journal and the Criminal Law Quarterly. John was a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He also teaches law and legal history at Humber College in the Bachelor of Arts degree program in Paralegal Studies and he has taught business law at Ryerson University in Toronto.
